7 MINING FOCUS Mark Compton, President PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE continued on page 8 T he Utah Mining Association exists to advocate for and advance the interests of the mineral resource and related industries in Utah. We represent all sectors of the mining industry, from hardrock to coal to industrial minerals. We represent and inform our members in the legislative and regulatory arenas at the local, state and federal levels. Furthermore, public education is a significant part of what we do. Whether it is with elected officials, regulators, students, or the general public, it is important for us as an association to educate them on the importance of, and the policies necessary for, a strong Utah mining industry. Utah citizens overwhelmingly support the state’s mining industry because they recognize mining’s significance to the state not just because mining is one of Utah’s original industries, and not just because of the continuing important economic contributions of the industry. They also understand how mining benefits their lives every second of every day, making our modern way of life possible. That understanding is critical for the mining industry to maintain the social license to operate we currently enjoy in Utah. It is a challenge for, and a mission of, the Utah Mining Association to ensure future generations make that same connection. Therefore, we invest heavily in educating young Utah citizens overwhelmingly support the state’s mining industry because they recognize mining’s significance to the state. Not just because mining is one of Utah’s original industries. And not just because of the continuing important economic contributions of the industry.
