10 AT THE CENTER OF UTAH INDUSTRY T he U.S. mining industry has made significant strides in improving the health and safety of its workforce. In fact, mining is now one of the safest industries in the nation. The industry has accom- plished that by going beyond what is required by regulations to develop and implement best practices that encourage a “culture of safety.” The commitment to a culture of safety within the mining industry leads to continuous improvement to reach the goal of zero injuries. To achieve continuous improvement in mine safety and health, the mining industry and Utah Mining Association members promote health and safety as a core value. We strive to instill the values of safety leadership, accountability and personal involvement in every employee, and to provide them with the required training and tools to prevent fatalities, injuries or occupational illnesses. The Utah Mining Association is proud to encourage and enhance the culture of safety among its members. One way we do that is by hosting the Annual Mining & Manufacturing Safety Conference in partnership with the Utah Manufacturers Association, focusing on important safety issues within the mining and manufacturing industries. In April, we conducted our 7th annual conference that included inspiring keynote speakers, informative technical breakout sessions, and our Annual Safety Awards program. We feel it is important to recognize significant achievements in safety performance by our member companies. As part of the Mining & Manufacturing Safety Conference, we proudly presented Safety Awards to 15 member operations for demonstrating outstanding safety performance during the previous calendar year. Many thanks to our Safety Conference sponsors: Fabian VanCott, Wheeler Mining Systems, Komatsu and Intermountain Rigging & HeavyHaul. We would also like to thank the Utah Labor Commission for their support of the conference and our safety awards program. X
