9 MINING FOCUS P&H in 1968 launched the 2800 Mark I class shovel, featuring a new Electrotorque drive system designed to meet the world's growing demand for coal, iron and copper. In 1991 it unveiled the 4100C electric mining shovel, which continues to be an industry leader. Just a few years later P&H launched the 9020 walking dragline in Australia and the 120A blasthole drill. Joy also innovated at a rapid pace: from the introduction of the first Joy low-seam shuttle car in 1969 and the 1972 launch of high-seam (12CM series) and low- seam (14CM series) continuous miners, to the 1975 unveiling of the first Joy longwall shearer and 1976 production of the first flexible conveyor train. The brand went on to create low- and high- seam shearers and by 1997 launched its first high-seam, high-voltage continuous miner and first VFD shearer (model 7LS). The introduction of the Faceboss control system in 2006 and Joy’s first Smart Services center in South Africa solidified the brand as a technological powerhouse. Montabert increased penetration of its brand with the 1987 success of its Robofore drilling system and the launch of the BRV range of breakers. The introduction of the BRV 65 model in 1999 added to the success of the BRV range in 2002, and the brand was awarded ISO 9001 certification version 2000. By the time P&H Mining Equipment and Joy Mining Machinery joined forces to form Joy Global in 2012, both brands had helped reshape many aspects of the mining industry. When Joy Global acquired Montabert in 2015 it bolstered the company’s hard rock offerings, further solidifying the company as a leader in underground and surface mining applications. The next generation The c ompany ’s c ommi tmen t t o transformational products, technologies and services remains strong, with several exciting developments unveiled in the past year. Leading the charge on incorporating data and analytics to improve machine performance, Joy Global now offers fully customizable JoySmart Solutions; integrations of the company’s smart, connected products and systems, advanced analytics and direct services customized to solve customers’ toughest challenges. Connected products deliver data to JoySmart experts, who partner with customers through Joy Global’s direct service network. The analytics produced deliver necessary information on machine health and performance, providing direction for mining operations to help anticipate service needs and optimizemachine performance to achieve or exceed their financial and operating goals. In the Salt Lake area, JoySmart experts are activelymonitoring equipment and working directly with Joy Global customers with the goal of continuous improvement. The latest machines in Joy Global’s new class of underground hard rock loaders, the Joy 18HD and 22HD, are the world’s first LHDs equipped with an all-electric, smart driveline. They feature proprietary Joy SRHybrid Drive technology to enable the storage and reuse of braking energy, reducing overall fuel consumption by 30%. These LHDs also feature the new KESS or Kinetic Energy Storage System from Joy Global, which provides for deep storage of the regenerated energy; supplementing engine power to improve machine acceleration, reduce the effects of engine turbo lag and dramatically improve cycle times.
