16 AT THE CENTER OF UTAH INDUSTRY T he U.S. mining industry has made significant strides in improving the health and safety of its workforce. In fact, mining is now one of the safest industries in the nation. The industry has accomplished that by going beyond what is required by regulations to develop and implement best practices that encourage a “culture of safety.” The commitment to a culture of safety within the mining industry has led to each of the previous two years being the safest on record. Not resting on our laurels, the industry strives for continuous improvement to reach the goal of zero injuries. To achieve continuous improvement in mine safety and health, the mining industry and Utah Mining Association members promote health and safety as a core value. We strive to instill the values of safety leadership, accountability and personal involvement in every employee, and to provide them with the required training and tools to prevent fatalities, injuries or occupational illnesses. The Utah Mining Association is proud to encourage and enhance the culture of safety among its members. One way we do that is by hosting the Annual Mining & Manufacturing Safety Conference in partnership with the Utah Manufacturers Association, focusing on important safety issues within the mining and manufacturing industries.
