8 AT THE CENTER OF UTAH INDUSTRY The Utah Mining Association’s Annual Safety Award was recently presented to 17 member operations for demonstrating outstanding safety performance during the previous calendar year. The awards were presented during the 5th Annual Mining & Manufacturing Safety Conference in Salt Lake City. The U.S. mining industry has made significant strides in improving the health and safety of its workforce. In fact, 2015 was the safest year on record. In an effort to demonstrate that meeting the national average does not merit award, companies recognized for safety achievements by UMA are required to have an incident rate of half the national average or better. That means Utah companies receiving the UMA Annual Safety Award are twice as safe as the national average. Given that high threshold, the fact that UMA was able to present 17 safety awards during a year that nationally was the safest on record says a lot about the culture of safety within the Utah mining industry.
