16 AT THE CENTER OF UTAH INDUSTRY S ince it opened its first Utah warehouse in 1978, mining equipment and services provider Joy Global has grown rapidly in both its square footage and its mission. The Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based company employs more than 12,000 people worldwide and is home to leading equipment brands P&H, Joy andMontabert. The P&H surfacemining brand history dates back to 1884, Joy underground mining equipment dates back to 1919 and Montabert’s roots can be traced back to 1921. All of that experience became part of Joy Global in the 21st Century, and the company now aims to solve mining’s toughest challenges from 135 locations across the globe. Joy Global’s history in Utah started decades before it first set up a facility here, as Joy and P&H equipment has been used at area mines since at least the 1950s. The company officially staked a claim in 1978 when it opened a warehouse in Price for its underground products division and started providing field service for its equipment. By 1999, Joy Global’s Utah footprint had doubled in size to its current 60,000-square-foot sales and service facility in Wellington. Increasing its local presence for the many mining operations in Utah, as well as Wyoming and Colorado, demonstrates Joy Global’s unique role in the industry as a direct service provider. This allows the company to collaborate with its customers to develop innovative parts, products, consumables, and systems that lower their total cost of ownership while safely maximizing production. Its goal is to make every customer a reference by providing world-class equipment, service and systems enabled with its integrated JoySmart ® Solutions. In today’s challenging market, Joy Global’s direct service relationships are as important as ever, as it works with local customers to deliver value in ways that include reducing equipment downtime, increasing production and lowering operating costs. In some cases, Joy Global engineers are on site at area mines to support these initiatives, assisting with everything from bringing older machines back to OEM specifications to testing new product development projects. Successful partnerships with Utah customers resulted in the development of products including Joy Global’s next-generation dipper latch system, its Trackshield crawler shoe protection system and Adaptive Controls, a software and hardware package designed to quickly determine the optimum torque and speed to improve machine productivity and reduce boom jacking without impacting shovel life.
