8 AT THE CENTER OF UTAH INDUSTRY Brahma Group, Inc. B rahma Group, Inc. head- quartered in Salt Lake City, Utah is a leading industrial construction company in the Intermountain West and is quickly expanding its reach throughout the United States. Brahma was recently ranked by Utah Business Magazine as the 4th fastest growing company in Utah. Brahma was also ranked in Engineering News Records’ national list of the Top 400 Contractors throughout the United States. The roots of Brahma’s national growth run deep in the mining industry. Brahma was founded in 2002 when a handful of employees performed a sin- gle maintenance job with a local copper mine. The success on that project led to the beginning of an extraordinary reputation that has propelled Brahma to emerge as a leading contractor in the mining industry. Brahma has grown in the mining industry, to service mining companies producing various miner- als including copper, gold, coal, trona, lime and molybdenum. Brahma safely provides maintenance, capital project and shutdown services to various mines throughout the United States. Brahma attributes much of its growth to its suc- cess in assisting mines reduce lost production time due to shutdowns, out- ages, and maintenance. Beyond Zero A proactive, industry-first initiative that's paying off. Part of Brahma’s success derives from its approach to safety, called Beyond Zero. A familiar term within the industry is "zero harm"—an honorable goal to reach zero safety incidents in the field. But what's the best way to get to zero? According to Brahma, the solution is to reach beyond it—like kicking a football out of the end zone to eliminate any possibility of a run back. Brahma makes safety more than a statistic or a mark— they make safety a way of being—a part of company, family and personal culture. How does Beyond Zero work? “It starts with who we involve in our safety cul- ture—who participates” remarks Jon Wickizer, Brahma’s Corporate Health and Safety Director. The answer is "ev- eryone." From upper management to each field worker, everyone begins their day by filling out a FLARE (Field Level Assessment of Risk in the Environment) Card, consistently keeping safety top of mind. Management leads the cul- ture, and every employee participates in acknowledging the daily acts that encourage the entire Brahma team to put safety first. Safety is about develop - ing the individual and enabling them to confidently practice safety on a job site. The principles that guide Beyond Zero have led to over thirty safety recognition awards since 2010, Including 5 con- secutive Mine Safety awards from the Utah Mining Association for outstanding safety performance. “Our safety num - bers and results speak for themselves,” remarks Jon. The efforts and resources and people that make Beyond Zero a reality represent the heart of Brahma culture, and this culture began and flour - ished in mining. Beyond Zero couldn’t be possible without many well-executed safety programs. From weekly topics on safety dissemi-
