16 AT THE CENTER OF UTAH INDUSTRY CONSTRUCTION continued from page 15 Santiago Calatrava visits the site of his creation, the OAKA Olympic Sports Complex in Athens, Greece. Beijing National Stadium, AKA the Bird’s Nest maintenance cost $700,000 every year. The second at- tempt was more successful. In the spring of 1998, the Kevlar fabric was replaced by a nonretractable Fiberglass fabric coated in opaque blue Teflon that cost $26 million. • The Munich Olympic Stadium complex employs transpar - ent polyester fabric that has been treated with PVC. The fabric is draped over hangers so that it effectively distrib- utes daylight evenly below the fabric. In addition, the roof also has thousands of tiles made from clear transparent glass that form a cover, much like the roof of a tent, over the stadium and some of its satellite buildings. The roof is supported by a net made of steel that has been attached to several large masts. It covers a total area of 915,000 square feet. Some of the materials used to build stadiums are old and familiar, such as concrete and steel. Some of the materials are technological marvels, such as Fiberglass, polycarbonate, and ETFE. Whatever materials are used, however, the raw materials are found in mines. Next time you find yourself at a stadium ready to enjoy a football or soccer game, look around at the materials that were used to construct the stadium. Even maintaining the grass on the field probably means using min - ing products such as fertilizers. If it weren’t for mining, in other words, your favorite teams wouldn’t have a place to play ball.
